Gameplay Highlight#1: Part 2

Hi Everyone,

If you missed our last update, we gave a progress report with information about the progress of the Fairytale Games: Battle Royale campaign deliverables. Before we get into the continuation of the Gameplay elements, there were a couple of questions we had that we wanted to give you the answers to.

What was the delivery date again?

For what our goals are, we are on schedule to complete everything by May and set all files for the games (and send them to the printer) by the first week of June. Following, printing will take about a month and be sent to our distribution warehouse by July. The Sacred 40 miniatures will be coordinated to ship to the same distributors to ensure everything stays together. In July/August, shipping will be an ongoing process until everyone is fulfilled. We won’t have the exact shipping schedule to determine the “wave” order until July.

So is everything going to be shipped together?

Yes! Unless our distributors decide at the last minute (which at the moment we have not been told so) that it would be more practical to send things off in segments, we expect everything to be shipped in one package. If you’re a Lion King tier or above, we are estimating each full Fairytale Games Edition (Battle Royale, Horror, Steampunk, and Zombie) to weigh about 4.5 lbs. A good reference point would be the Marvel deckbuilding game, Legendary. The box size should be pretty similar. So imagine 4 of those plus minis, artbooks and other goodies you added on. In a nutshell, you’re looking at a 25lb package at your door. Of course, distribution has the final say and if things do change and shipment is done in segments, we’ll make sure you receive the segment schedule as we find out. But until then, one big package 🙂

SUPER FAIRYTALE FIGHTERS 2

A really cool surprise for us today, was that some of our artists really wanted to get a head start on this and turned in their other assignments in early. That is always a good thing. So currently, we have 4 Super Fairytale Fighters 2 decks in the process:

  • Snow
  • Red
  • Alice
  • Mulan (Note: Mulan does not ship with this campaign, rather the minis campaign.)

Ok, now let’s continue into the gameplay!

TYPES OF CARDS:

In Fairytale Games: The Battle Royale, besides Character Cards, there are different types of cards that you’ll encounter in the main game and in battle mode. For this section, we’ll just cover the main game card types.

1. ITEM CARDS:

There are three different types of items; general (all purpose) ones you use in the game, equipped ones, and epic items. All Purpose Items are used for quests or to help you gain the advantage or as a response from certain things your opponent or a situation may do to you.

Here is an example of an All Purpose Item:

An Equipable Items lets your Character equip it to add bonuses for the main game or for you during battle. For the most part, equipped items stay with you until you unequip them or they are destroyed. You can only equip two items at the same time.

An Epic Item is an item that pertains to a character’s specific storyline. If they acquire it, there is a way for that character to unlock the bonus or ability associated with it that only they can use. If another character uses that item, they can get a smaller bonus or even use the item against the specific character that the item is related to, with deadlier results. For a basic example, let’s look at Mulan’s Jade Sword.

2. QUEST CARDS

There are 3 types of quests you can do in the game; Local Quest, Heroic Quest, and Character Quest.

Local Quests:

These are the regular quests that you can easily do by yourself and are very straight forward. Finishing a local quest is pretty quick and usually gives you one type of reward and a “reputation” point.

Heroic Quests:

Much more difficult than Local Quests, you will also need a certain number of “reputation points” to start these quests. A Heroic Quest will require you to do a few different things or gather certain items or people before you can locate/enter the Boss Area. Once you have access, you will fight a Boss which will end up rewarding you greatly or killing you off pretty quickly. Heroic Quests are best done with allies in your party or having other players join you to complete. You can only have one Heroic Quest open at one time.

Character Quests:

These are quests specific to a character in the game. If you complete your character’s quest, you will either level up your character or will gain an ability or receive a reward that will be very helpful to the character (or enhance their existing ability.) A different character is also able to complete a Character Quest. If they complete it, the reward will either be something generic, something worth bartering with, or will give them a weakness to use against that quest’s character.

3. LOCATION CARDS

There are two types of location cards. Basic Locations and Landmark Cards. Basic Locations are part of the world you explore. When revealed, these cards will have trait bonuses you can gather (normally only once if you choose to land on that location), random enemies that may pop up, random items to be found or the ability to find random quests.

Landmark Location Cards are locations of significance. These landmarks either begin quests, are end-points to quests, or trigger certain things to happen. Some Landmarks act as vehicles or a way to move easier throughout the map.

4. ACTION CARDS:

These are cards that can be used either during Battle Mode or during the Movement Phase. Depending on the Action Cards, they may also be played on other player’s turns. Action Cards are not character specific so anyone can use them just as long as they pay the Trait Cost, and are discarded as soon as they are used. Here is an example:

5. EVENT CARDS:

In Fairytale Games: The Battle Royale, these cards mark 1 full day in the Fairytale Games. The player who goes first will be the “Sundial”. At the beginning of their turn, the will reveal an Event Card from the Event Deck. This card effects everyone in play either instantly or during their turn (depending on the text of the Event Card.) During this time, players can react to Event Cards with Action Cards, Items, or Abilities if able to do so. At the beginning of the Sundial’s next turn, they will discard the first Event in play and reveal another one, signifying Day 2.

Event cards represent what the Trinity (the three Queens) are doing in the background while the game is in progress. They may either create problem scenarios for players, force players to battle, or just observe and do nothing at all. Remember, the Queens are watching the Fairytale Games to see who is indeed left worthy to be their Champion. If they feel things are a bit too boring, their events will definitely shake things up for everyone!

(Note: Event Card Mechanics will differ between Horror Edition, Steampunk Edition, Zombie Edition, and Pantheon Edition.)

6. BATTLE CARDS: We will cover this when we talk about BATTLE MODE.

7. TACTIC CARDS: We will cover this when we talk about ADVANCED BATTLE MODE.

PLAYER BOARDS:

Every character in the game will have their respective player boards. These boards are what players will use to determine their primary character’s attacks, defense, super moves, weaknesses and more! Let’s break it down for you to see.

 

On the top, you’ll recognize the name of the character you’re using as your primary. Below, you will see six boxed areas for you to place your resource gems; Intelligence, Strength, Willpower, Magic, Persuasion, and Reputation. During the game, you will spend, gain, or have these resource points taken away from you.

Health Bubble: This is how much damage your character will take before they die.

MVM Bubble: When playing ADVANCED mode, instead of using dice roll to determine your movement each turn, every character will have their own set movement based on the balance of their stats. To keep things interesting, your movement total can go up or down depending on things you equip, action cards, events or abilities. You can find out more about advanced movement in the gameplay section (coming soon!)

FCT Bubble: This is what faction you belong in. In this example, Red belongs in the Mercenary Faction.

Weak Bubble: This is what your character is weak against. In this example, it’s fire. If Red is hit with a fire attack, she will take an additional damage, sometimes even based on a dice roll.

ELMT Bubble: This shows you if your character has a elemental strength (Fire, Water, Ice, Earth, Lightning, Wind, Curse, Holy, Poison, Wood, Metal). If not, you will see an “X”.

Under this area, you will see a section that will display your Attack and Defense moves. These will be different for each character. In EASY BATTLE MODE, you will be rolling dice to determine both. Whatever comes up in the roll, you’ll refer to this section. In ADVANCED BATTLE MODE you will have cards that give you a choice between two Attack moves or two Defense moves which you can strategically play. Check out the different battle modes in our gameplay section for more information.

If you notice in the above sample, there are different effects that might occur if an attack is successful. Here’s what they mean:

Pierce: Your attack ignores any armor or defense

Bleed: You will do additional damage determined by a dice roll

Dizzy: Your opponent will discard a card at random from their hand

Poison: Your opponent gets a Poison Counter

Stun: Your opponent cannot attack or play a super move

Break: You will cause an opponent’s equipped item to break and be discarded

In ADVANCED BATTLE MODE you can access your character’s personal Super Moves. This is made up of usually two moves, Special Attacks (the first one) and a Desperation Moves (the second one). The Special Attack can be played at any time you play the respective card from the Battle Deck. It usually takes a certain number of trait points to execute and can be blocked. The Desperation Move on the other hand has to meet a specific criteria to execute and usually comes with a punishment if you fail. It also requires the usage of trait points.

On the bottom area, you will notice the ITEM SLOT section. Each character can normally only equip 2 items. You can switch equipped items, use or have them destroyed. If your weapon, armor, or item is not equipped during battle mode, you cannot change them up from cards in your hand until after the battle is over. Some character can equip an extra item. In that case, just stack another card on top.

Multiple Characters:

If a character joins you in your party, leave your primary character on top and slide the other characters to the right of your Player Board like so.

 

(Note: The character board used in these examples are not final though for the most part it will be very close. The map used on the bottom background will be an actual Fairytale Games: Battle Royale map!)
